I want my cell phone back!

I currently live in Illinois where it is unlawful to talk on the phone while driving. At least if it is not hands-free.

When one’s hands are free, they are available to do other things. Why have the officials not thought of this?

Now with hands unencumbered by phones we can eat more messy foods. Is a phone more dangerous than a sandwich whose filling is spilling out with every nibble? I ask you!

Or how about the hot cup of java whose lid is not on securely? If I was having a good chat on my drive, my coffee might sit there until cooled to a drinkable temp. Now, with my hands available for sipping, I attempt the coffee sooner. If the lid goes flying, the hot drink becomes a hazard, and things go crazy at the wheel. My phone would have been much safer.

Now we have the option to spread some schmear on a bagel while driving. Safer than a phone? Puh-leeze.

Need an aspirin? I have an entire hand free to dig around in my purse, inspecting each item I remove, piling the contents onto the passenger seat and rooting in the bottom for a stray pill once I find my container is empty.

Safer than a phone?

No, I do not want a hands-free phone option, even though my son is insisting I get one. With a phone in hand, I can set it down if a trucker is making me nervous, or I see someone applying mascara and want to get around them safely, or I need to merge and squeeze left two lanes within a quarter of a mile. How does that work with a hands-free option? I can say “hang on” but that often goes unheeded.

On top of which, my commute is my best chat time. I can’t cook dinner or do laundry, I can’t write a book (or read one), I can’t vacuum or scrub a toilet. I’m just sitting and driving. I can get caught up, deliver messages, follow-up on stuff, or get details about an upcoming event.

What a time saver! What a lovely double duty!

I just want my phone back. In my hand. Ready for chat time as I drive.

Can I?

Please?

I’m hearing a NO very loud and clear.

A New Chapter

Sometimes we long for a new chapter in our life for what feels like ages. Other times it pops up before us like a beautiful vista after cresting a hill. That is where my husband and I are.

At a new chapter. A new beginning. A fresh adventure. Continue reading

My Organizational Secrets

I’m a wannabe — I’m sure most people are in some category. And perhaps in more than one.

Org Secrets

I’m a wannabe organized person. I can be very organized on the job, but at home it has always been W.O.R.K. My third child, a girl, came from the womb organized. She takes after my mother. I did not inherit that gene. By the age of 6 she was taking care of my spice cabinet. At 10 she banned me from putting away groceries in the pantry. She said I did not do it correctly. I talk about them here. Continue reading

A Penman Ponders …

That seems to be what I do. I ponder things. I love to think about things. Odd? I know.

frog pondering

I remember, years ago, when a young co-worker found out that I did not turn the radio on in my car. She freaked. Seriously. It was hilarious. She did some research online to find out how many people don’t listen to music while they drive. Especially when they have a long commute, like me.

Suffice it to say I was in the minority. Vast minority. Continue reading

Making Waves

I joined the YMCA a few months ago to use the pool for therapy on my ailing knee as well as exercise. I love the water.

It has proven to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in a while. Three weeks in and the swelling was down by 80%. After six weeks I no longer wore my brace. Now I love going for the exercise and the relaxation. Continue reading

People are funny

Sometimes, as day runs into day, it is easy to miss the hilarity that meets us through people all around us. Or we ignore it. Or forget it.

But life is fun because of people.

three people laughing

One of the things I like more than anything is witty-ness and puns. A really good pun can tickle my funny bone to the embarrassing point. Sometimes, if it really tickles me, I can laugh about it again and again, reliving it. Continue reading

Staring at a blank screen

How many times have we done that? Just stared at a blank screen.blank monitor

We need to get something written,  nothing comes. We need to plan something for dinner, no ideas. We need to write a comforting card to someone, the words aren’t there. We need to make it through our must-do list, our energy evaporates.

Today it is a blank screen for me. Nice bright white screen.

And it made me think about life. Sometimes we forget that every single day is a clean slate, a blank screen, an empty page waiting to be written upon. Continue reading

What a great saying!

Just the other day I had someone say to me “Thanks for being you.”

Then, the next day, I responded to something online and the company sent me the same response in giant letters that basically filled my entire screen.

What a great sentence:

Thanks for being you.

It has a lot wrapped up in it. Continue reading

Encourage is a Verb

It is something we do. An action verb. We should do this action often.  On purpose. Repeatedly!

encourage is a verb

It’s so easy to say something kind and uplifting. Really, it’s not hard. And usually only takes a moment or two. But is isn’t performed as often as one would think.

I love to send out notes. It is one of my favorite things to do. But it is easy to forget with the general busy-ness of life. But is only takes a few moments (I remind myself). So do it! Continue reading
