Simple Food = Healthy Life

We all know processed food and fast food are not real food. Even when we eat them for convenience, deep inside we know. We struggle sometimes to keep that knowledge deep inside.

But we know.

And it is frustrating.

Frustrating because we have convenience all around us, but real health does not live in convenience or easy. It lives in real stuff. Real food. Real movement. Real relationships. And real stuff is not pre-packaged and super convenient.  Continue reading

Sometimes Writers don’t Write; they spill

I woke up this morning, just a regular Monday morning. My plan with crawling out super early was to focus on writing. If you really want to be a writer, you must (MUST) set aside time to write. Daily is preferable.

So here I was, sitting with my laptop on my lap, at 4:00 a.m. Monday morning, October 2, 2017. Ready to do the work.

Then a text came in. That is not alarming. So many of my loved ones are back east. It is not 4:00 a.m. everywhere. It was my son-in-law “Are you guys ok?” I just stared at the phone and looked around me.

My patio door was open. Silence there. My husband was asleep in the next room. Peaceful snoring there. No rumbling underfoot. No hurricane level winds. “What happened?” I asked.

Then the news was revealed to me.

'Pray For Las Vegas!!! #prayers #prayforlasvegas #prayforvegas #praying #tonytirado #ifbbprotonytirado #singlefitdad #singledad #lasvegas #lasvegasstrip #lasvegastrip #lasvegasnevada #lasvegaslastnight #omaryargelia #omaryargeliashow #jomarigoyso #televisa #news #univision #despiertaamerica #univision34 #univision34la #cecibogran #fernandakelly #olympia #tonytirado #singlefitdad'

The worst mass shooting in America’s history has happened a few miles from my home. Across the boulevard from where we go every Friday night to enjoy a lovely songwriter’s show.

Devastating. Such a horrid loss of life. For what? Nothing. So much heartache. For what? Not a thing.

So, no writing took place today. Just this blurb on this platform where I choose to spill my heart.

Treasure life. Embrace loved ones. Live positively. Love wildly. Speak words of kindness, not hatred. Believe the best. Be the light. Let your beam break through. To everyone with all you have in you as much as you possibly can.

Every day.

I Love My Colorful Facebook Feed

I love my colorful Facebook feed

I love Facebook. I really do. I love scrolling through and seeing the faces, reading the stories, hearing the prayer requests, rejoicing in the victories.

I love my Facebook feed because it is full of color. I love colors. I love them all. Purple is my favorite, but I have yet to have a purple friend. Purple-haired friend, yes, I got that. But my feed is full of color.

I have friends of every shade. My feed is full of smiling folks: white folks, Asian folks, African American folks, Indian folks. I’ve got a host of bi-racial couples, white couples with adopted African-American kiddos, or Ethiopian kids, or Jamaican, or Chinese, or Guatemalan. I have families that have all kinds of shades of skin around their dining room table. Continue reading

Savor the moments

Have you ever wanted to just sloooooooow down? We all have. Well, I assume we all have. Things get crazy. Life gets blurry. The task list is long and can get cumbersome. The constant unending chores to get done.

It is regular. It is normal. It is disheartening.

And we miss things.

I hate missing things.

When my kids were young, I wanted to savor the moments. But I was a working mom and a children’s minister and had a great friend circle and a home. And meals. And laundry. And … and … and … like you, probably. Continue reading

Seriously, I cannot begin to tell you how thrilled I am. I made it the entire length of the 60 Day Challenge I set for myself.

60 days for myself

Sometimes you just gotta stop for one second and be proud of yourself. Sometimes you gotta just pat yourself on the back and say YAY ME!

That’s where I am. However, I am absolutely not stopping here. I have set a Challenge for myself for the next 30 Days. AND I am joining with a friend for a series of 10 Day Challenges where we are pushing ourselves in one or two areas and holding each other accountable.

There is nothing like the feeling of success. Not. One. Thing.

Are you challenging yourself in an area right now? Please comment on this blog (below). Share it with the world. Make it public. It seems a little more real when you do.

I can’t wait to encourage you back.

Vegan? REALLY?

I know what you are thinking. Vegan? What is that word doing on a post title?

On, more specifically, my post title???

Well, I’ve been on a health journey. I felt lead to put myself on a 60 day challenge (I talked about it already here.and here.) But I never would have expected it would take me here.

I would have argued with you if you said it would. Actually, I think I did argue about it. Continue reading

60 First Days

Whether it is a new challenge, hustle, dream, goal, or job; that first day is awesome. So much motivation. So much hope. So much commitment. Nothing but positive as far as your eye can see.

But the first day bliss wears off. Reality kind of sets in. The motivation becomes more gray tones than black and white. And that stinks because you really want to do this! Continue reading

Being Allowed To Help

You know what is a little thing? Saying the word “Yes” or “Sure” when someone offers to help.

It is such a little thing to allow someone the gift of doing something for you.

Yes, I am speaking from my heart here. I absolutely love doing stuff for people. It is part of what makes me me. And when someone is kind enough to just say “Yes,” that is a delight to the soul. Continue reading

The Enormity of Little Things

There were seven ladies sitting in the very cozy living of our pastor’s wife enjoying a Bible study and sharing our lives with one another. Extremely comfortable in each other’s presence, our guards were down.

We were bantering a subject back and forth, everyone chiming in, everyone voicing an opinion, everyone listening to the others. Then, suddenly, a dear friend, Eileen, said this phrase:

If only we understood the enormity of little things.

Tips for Getting Started in Meal Planning

Sometimes we drive our own selves crazy. Don’t go intensely into it. Just start. Scribble a list. Don’t make a list of gourmet meals you have never cooked before. Begin with your regulars. Don’t read 400 blog posts about it and 2,317 Pinterest recipes.

  • Pull out a piece of paper
  • Go to your kitchen
  • Open your pantry, your fridge, and your freezer
  • Write down the main dish items you have on hand
  • Add a side dish or salad
  • Wa-Lah!!!
