Sometimes Overwhelmed Is GOOD!

It is just a regular Thursday. No biggie. Day 4 of the work week. Early in the month. Nothing special.

Except …

I started thinking about my life. You know, just pondering. Letting the thoughts roll about on their own. And I got instantly overwhelmed.

Six grandchildren that can light up my face and day and world by doing absolutely nothing except being. My 2-year-old calls me to tell me important stuff. The 3-year-old has to show me stuff on every video call because he knows how important it is for me to see everything he loves. The 4 and 6 year olds act like lunatics with excitement or just plain weirdness that I play over again and again in my mind and heart long after the call has ended. And my darling 7-year-old girl. . . I can just stare at her picture and get misty. Continue reading

I Love My Colorful Facebook Feed

I love my colorful Facebook feed

I love Facebook. I really do. I love scrolling through and seeing the faces, reading the stories, hearing the prayer requests, rejoicing in the victories.

I love my Facebook feed because it is full of color. I love colors. I love them all. Purple is my favorite, but I have yet to have a purple friend. Purple-haired friend, yes, I got that. But my feed is full of color.

I have friends of every shade. My feed is full of smiling folks: white folks, Asian folks, African American folks, Indian folks. I’ve got a host of bi-racial couples, white couples with adopted African-American kiddos, or Ethiopian kids, or Jamaican, or Chinese, or Guatemalan. I have families that have all kinds of shades of skin around their dining room table. Continue reading

The Enormity of Little Things

There were seven ladies sitting in the very cozy living of our pastor’s wife enjoying a Bible study and sharing our lives with one another. Extremely comfortable in each other’s presence, our guards were down.

We were bantering a subject back and forth, everyone chiming in, everyone voicing an opinion, everyone listening to the others. Then, suddenly, a dear friend, Eileen, said this phrase:

If only we understood the enormity of little things.

Here I am …

In the South West. Far, far away from my little loves, my friends, all things familiar. It is crazy exciting (another word for exhausting) and beautiful (another word for gorgeous). But I miss my peeps.

I know God will fill that hole a bit when we are able to get involved and meet people, but they will never take the place of those that have filled my days and years for the past few decades. The laughs, the lessons, the lunches. The troubles, the teasing, the triumphs. The crying, the card games, the communion.

I miss it all.

I knew I would. That doesn’t shock me. But it doesn’t comfort me either.

Life takes turns and twists and we are on one of those (or both) at present. We love thinking about what we have in store. We are enjoying the “putting our new life together” phase. It is odd and fun.

But when I lay my head down at night I see the little faces that made my face light up daily. And my eyes leak.

My three stooges

My three stooges

But I know God will care of them as well. It never was up to me anyway. It’s all Him. And for that I am thankful and mindful to keep that perspective in tact.

I am ready for new experiences, but I hate leaving the old ones so far away. Yes, it is the typical cake-and-eat-it-too syndrome. Full force.

But we do it anyway, because it is what He has told us to do.

For all of you who read this who have been such a prized part of my history, I treasure you.

Are you feeling alone? Even in the midst of loved ones? It happens to everyone. Go to Him. He is there. Comment below with a smiley face, I’ll pray for you. Smiling through the discomfort is sometimes the only way to get to the other side.

Blessing those who have blessed me,

Pat Meyers

A Penman Ponders …

That seems to be what I do. I ponder things. I love to think about things. Odd? I know.

frog pondering

I remember, years ago, when a young co-worker found out that I did not turn the radio on in my car. She freaked. Seriously. It was hilarious. She did some research online to find out how many people don’t listen to music while they drive. Especially when they have a long commute, like me.

Suffice it to say I was in the minority. Vast minority. Continue reading

Saying Thank You

What a thing to say — thank you. It’s not hard, but then sometimes it is, for a variety of reasons.

But it is a lovely thing to have said to you. Thank you — whether it is for a kind gesture, a gift, a thoughtful comment, or anything done whether big or small. Continue reading

A life consistent

There is nothing like a story of someone who changed their situation massively. Or someone who overcame tremendous odds. You know, the Olympic athlete that came from meager beginnings and worked 42 jobs to enable him/her to train 100 hours a week and made it to the Olympic podium winning over those with every possible support and resource available to them. Or the author who sold their first manuscript for a million dollars and went from rags to riches by their skill and talent and determination.

Those stories stir us, inspire us, motivate us, and sometimes shame us. They are fantastic. Continue reading

People are funny

Sometimes, as day runs into day, it is easy to miss the hilarity that meets us through people all around us. Or we ignore it. Or forget it.

But life is fun because of people.

three people laughing

One of the things I like more than anything is witty-ness and puns. A really good pun can tickle my funny bone to the embarrassing point. Sometimes, if it really tickles me, I can laugh about it again and again, reliving it. Continue reading

Encouragement From A Bathroom Story

I know, weird title, but it’s true.

My brother, Mike, married Jane from Maine 26 years ago. She is lovely and kind and we have enjoyed our times together through the years even though they have been too few and too far between.

They have lived everywhere except near my family. But that didn’t matter. When my kids go to see their Uncle Mike and Aunt Jane they were thrilled. Especially Uncle Mike because he would shoot off fireworks with them. Continue reading
