I want my cell phone back!

I currently live in Illinois where it is unlawful to talk on the phone while driving. At least if it is not hands-free.

When one’s hands are free, they are available to do other things. Why have the officials not thought of this?

Now with hands unencumbered by phones we can eat more messy foods. Is a phone more dangerous than a sandwich whose filling is spilling out with every nibble? I ask you!

Or how about the hot cup of java whose lid is not on securely? If I was having a good chat on my drive, my coffee might sit there until cooled to a drinkable temp. Now, with my hands available for sipping, I attempt the coffee sooner. If the lid goes flying, the hot drink becomes a hazard, and things go crazy at the wheel. My phone would have been much safer.

Now we have the option to spread some schmear on a bagel while driving. Safer than a phone? Puh-leeze.

Need an aspirin? I have an entire hand free to dig around in my purse, inspecting each item I remove, piling the contents onto the passenger seat and rooting in the bottom for a stray pill once I find my container is empty.

Safer than a phone?

No, I do not want a hands-free phone option, even though my son is insisting I get one. With a phone in hand, I can set it down if a trucker is making me nervous, or I see someone applying mascara and want to get around them safely, or I need to merge and squeeze left two lanes within a quarter of a mile. How does that work with a hands-free option? I can say “hang on” but that often goes unheeded.

On top of which, my commute is my best chat time. I can’t cook dinner or do laundry, I can’t write a book (or read one), I can’t vacuum or scrub a toilet. I’m just sitting and driving. I can get caught up, deliver messages, follow-up on stuff, or get details about an upcoming event.

What a time saver! What a lovely double duty!

I just want my phone back. In my hand. Ready for chat time as I drive.

Can I?

Please?

I’m hearing a NO very loud and clear.

Purple Paint

The walls in my office are painted purple

purple paint

And why shouldn’t they be? I love that color. I love it on the inside of me.

I wish I didn’t love it so much. I wish I wasn’t so predictable.

But … I do … and I am.

We will move from our house this year (we are cleaning the attic and basement as we speak — err … write). I wonder if I’ll ever have another completely purple room. Perhaps. Perhaps not.

But I’ve had one for well over a decade. And I’ve loved it. Continue reading

Staring at a blank screen

How many times have we done that? Just stared at a blank screen.blank monitor

We need to get something written,  nothing comes. We need to plan something for dinner, no ideas. We need to write a comforting card to someone, the words aren’t there. We need to make it through our must-do list, our energy evaporates.

Today it is a blank screen for me. Nice bright white screen.

And it made me think about life. Sometimes we forget that every single day is a clean slate, a blank screen, an empty page waiting to be written upon. Continue reading

Laughter does good like a medicine

Who would argue with that point? No one! Well, no one that’s fun, that’s for sure and certain.

Pat laughing

Goodness I love to laugh. I love to make people laugh. And I love it when people make me laugh. I get a kick out of a funny sense of humor. I think my favorite is when someone takes a regular fact and pulls a twist on it. Or irony, I love that. Or sarcastic humor.

But my favorite of all is wit. It tickles my funny bone like little else. I have spent many a moment embarrassed by cracking up a “little too much” when no one else laughed. Oh well. Their loss.
