Sometimes Writers don’t Write; they spill

I woke up this morning, just a regular Monday morning. My plan with crawling out super early was to focus on writing. If you really want to be a writer, you must (MUST) set aside time to write. Daily is preferable.

So here I was, sitting with my laptop on my lap, at 4:00 a.m. Monday morning, October 2, 2017. Ready to do the work.

Then a text came in. That is not alarming. So many of my loved ones are back east. It is not 4:00 a.m. everywhere. It was my son-in-law “Are you guys ok?” I just stared at the phone and looked around me.

My patio door was open. Silence there. My husband was asleep in the next room. Peaceful snoring there. No rumbling underfoot. No hurricane level winds. “What happened?” I asked.

Then the news was revealed to me.

'Pray For Las Vegas!!! #prayers #prayforlasvegas #prayforvegas #praying #tonytirado #ifbbprotonytirado #singlefitdad #singledad #lasvegas #lasvegasstrip #lasvegastrip #lasvegasnevada #lasvegaslastnight #omaryargelia #omaryargeliashow #jomarigoyso #televisa #news #univision #despiertaamerica #univision34 #univision34la #cecibogran #fernandakelly #olympia #tonytirado #singlefitdad'

The worst mass shooting in America’s history has happened a few miles from my home. Across the boulevard from where we go every Friday night to enjoy a lovely songwriter’s show.

Devastating. Such a horrid loss of life. For what? Nothing. So much heartache. For what? Not a thing.

So, no writing took place today. Just this blurb on this platform where I choose to spill my heart.

Treasure life. Embrace loved ones. Live positively. Love wildly. Speak words of kindness, not hatred. Believe the best. Be the light. Let your beam break through. To everyone with all you have in you as much as you possibly can.

Every day.

So long 2016 …

Looking back on a trip around the calendar is an excellent use of time. And my 2016 was a crazy one. How was yours?

  • It is the first year we did not add on a grandchild for the past 5 years! Crazy! (But we are adding one in 2017, so all is well.)
  • We moved from Illinois to Nevada! What? Really? yup!
  • I turned to a plant based diet! I did what exactly? It still seems strange. (Not as strange as the fact that we live in Las Vegas.) I wrote a little blurb about it here. Vegan, Really?
  • My writing took a serious back seat to the other things happening in my world. (Not my favorite thing on the list.)

It is vital to look at where you were and where you are. What are you happy with? What are you frustrated by? Continue reading

What are you working on?

There should never be a time in our life when we are not working on something.

So, what are you working on right now?

Are you improving a skill? Learning a new one?

Strengthening your body? Finishing a home project?

Mastering a recipe? Trying to grow some veggies? Continue reading

A New Chapter

Sometimes we long for a new chapter in our life for what feels like ages. Other times it pops up before us like a beautiful vista after cresting a hill. That is where my husband and I are.

At a new chapter. A new beginning. A fresh adventure. Continue reading

A Penman Ponders …

That seems to be what I do. I ponder things. I love to think about things. Odd? I know.

frog pondering

I remember, years ago, when a young co-worker found out that I did not turn the radio on in my car. She freaked. Seriously. It was hilarious. She did some research online to find out how many people don’t listen to music while they drive. Especially when they have a long commute, like me.

Suffice it to say I was in the minority. Vast minority. Continue reading

Purple Paint

The walls in my office are painted purple

purple paint

And why shouldn’t they be? I love that color. I love it on the inside of me.

I wish I didn’t love it so much. I wish I wasn’t so predictable.

But … I do … and I am.

We will move from our house this year (we are cleaning the attic and basement as we speak — err … write). I wonder if I’ll ever have another completely purple room. Perhaps. Perhaps not.

But I’ve had one for well over a decade. And I’ve loved it. Continue reading

Pet Therapy

This is my mom, Sue, and her dog, Joey. I can talk about how therapeutic a pet can be until I am blue in the face; but this picture alone is worth 2,000 words (I am counting 1,000 per character in the photo).

Mom and Joey

My mom had lost her little red-headed poodle named Zoe. Her heart was broken. Zoe was the last dog in a long line of dogs through my mom’s life. We had dogs all the while I was growing up: cockapoo, mutt, another mutt, little pug-style mutt, German shepherd. And she had two Lhasa Apsos before the red-headed poodle. Continue reading

Travel Therapy

I haven’t traveled as much as I would like, but I have been to 40 of the 50 states and two other countries. I know … I need to work on that. And I plan to do just that.

Even so; I absolutely love to travel. I love meeting new people, trying new food, seeing new sights, enjoying different foliage and climates. I love it. Every bit of it.
